Regional winners of the rural Oscars

Find out who won and why they won at this year’s regional awards

Congratulations to Postmasters who have won awards at the regional Countryside Alliance Awards. Dubbed the Rural Oscars, the awards recognise rural businesses that go the extra mile, support their local economy and are the unsung heroes in every community.

An amazing 18,000 businesses were nominated. Congratulations to those who won in the Village Shop/Post Office category. 7 of the 8 Regional winners in this category have Post Offices, showing that a Post Office and a retail store make a great combination, a vibrant community hub bringing local people together. The National winners will be announced in July 2021.

Congratulations to the following stores and good luck for the national awards. We have provided their Post Office branch and regions below, plus judges comments to show why they won;

  • Great Ryburgh Post Office, Norfolk, East of England region

Judges comments: "This village shop is run by the community, for the community. It not only provides a much needed Post Office but is a community hub, providing support, help and friendship to the customers. It is a real community gem."

  • Yarpole Post Office, Herefordshire, South Wales region

Judges comments: "Yarpole Community Shop and Post Office is a wonderful community enterprise. It is friendly, efficient and a great asset to the village community and beyond. Much more than a convenience store, it is the hub of the community, selling essential goods and little luxuries and freely giving friendship, companionship and cheer to everyone."

  • Chatton Post Office, Northumberland, North of England region

Judges comments: "Since taking over the shop the team at Chatton have turned this village shop into the hub of the community while showcasing fantastic local produce."

  • Slaidburn Post Office, Lancashire, North of England region

Judges comments: "Clare and Megan go out of their way to support residents in this remote village shop by offering great produce and a friendly smile. The village simply would not thrive without them."

  • Dolton Post Office, (located within Church Street Stores), Devon, South West region

Judges comments: "Church Street Stores is a wonderful asset to the village and the community. It stocks everything you need from interesting local produce as well as all the basics while keeping an eye on their impact to the environment. You couldn't ask for more."

  • Birstwith Post Office (located within Dale Stores), North Yorkshire, North of England region

Judges comment: "They are a lovely village store and Post Office offering great service and produce. They fought hard to keep the Post Office open but it has meant they were able to support lots of local businesses and keep the local economy strong."

  • Cilgerran Post Office, Pembrokeshire, South Wales region

Judges comments: "This village shop has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to reducing plastic usage and waste. A zero-waste section and refill station for dry goods sits proudly in the store and the collection of items such as crisps packets are sent to be recycled into outdoor furniture. The commitment to their locality is equally evident with strong nominations brimmed with gratitude for services aplenty."
